H1Z2Z2-K vs. PV1-F: Key Differences and Application Guide for Solar Photovoltaic Cables

When specifying Solar Photovoltaic Cables for a PV project, two model designations appear most frequently in technical documentation and tender specifications: H1Z2Z2-K and PV1-F. While both are single-core, flexible DC cables intended for the direct current (DC) side of photovoltaic systems, they belong to different generations of standardization and carry distinct performance envelopes. Understanding the differences is essential for correct specification, international project compliance, and long-term system reliability.

This article compares the two cable types across standards, electrical ratings, construction, and typical applications, with reference to internationally recognized testing requirements.

1. Standards and Certification Status: A Generational Shift

The most fundamental difference between H1Z2Z2-K and PV1-F lies in the standards they are designed to satisfy—and the market status of those standards.
PV1-F was developed under the German TÜV specification 2PfG 1169/08.2007, a widely adopted early standard for photovoltaic cables. For nearly a decade, PV1-F cables were the de facto choice for PV DC wiring in Europe and many export markets. However, the TÜV certification for PV1-F under 2PfG 1169 ceased renewal in October 2017, and the specification has been superseded by a harmonized European standard.
H1Z2Z2-K is designed and tested according to EN 50618, the current European harmonized standard for photovoltaic system cables. EN 50618 replaced the older 2PfG 1169 specification and imposes more stringent requirements—including thicker wall thicknesses, a higher rated DC voltage of 1,500 V, and additional performance criteria—with an expected service life of at least 25 years. Cables bearing the H1Z2Z2-K designation are typically certified by TÜV, VDE, or equivalent bodies and are recognized for international projects, particularly in the European and export markets.
For projects requiring long-term market compatibility and future-proof certification, H1Z2Z2-K represents the current standard, while PV1-F is a legacy designation whose certification has not been updated.

2. Voltage Ratings and System Compatibility
The rated voltage directly determines the maximum system voltage for which a cable is suitable.
H1Z2Z2-K carries a rated voltage of AC 1.0/1.0 kV and DC 1.5/1.5 kV (maximum DC voltage 1.8 kV). This makes it suitable for modern 1500 V DC PV systems, which are now the dominant architecture for large-scale solar farms.
PV1-F is typically rated at AC 0.6/1.0 kV and DC 0.9/1.8 kV (or DC 1.0 kV in some manufacturer specifications). While its DC rating can reach 1.8 kV under ungrounded, no-load conditions, its AC rating is lower than that of H1Z2Z2-K. In practice, PV1-F is generally associated with lower-voltage DC systems and small-to-medium distributed installations.
For high-power, long-distance DC transmission—where minimizing voltage drop and resistive losses is critical—H1Z2Z2-K’s higher and more robust voltage rating provides a clear advantage.

3. Insulation and Sheath Construction
Both cable types use halogen-free, cross-linked polyolefin compounds for insulation and sheath, but there are differences in construction philosophy.
H1Z2Z2-K is typically constructed with a double-layer insulation system—a separate insulation layer plus a protective sheath—using irradiation cross-linked LSZH (low smoke zero halogen) polyolefin. This construction enhances electrical insulation strength, mechanical robustness, and long-term durability in demanding environments.
PV1-F also uses LSZH cross-linked compounds, but the construction may be simpler, with a single insulation layer in some designs. While it meets the requirements of 2PfG 1169 for UV resistance, ozone resistance, and flame retardancy, it does not benefit from the thicker wall dimensions and additional performance margins mandated by EN 50618.
For installations subject to mechanical stress, abrasion, or prolonged direct exposure, the more robust construction of H1Z2Z2-K offers a higher margin of safety and durability.

4. Thermal and Environmental Performance
Both cable types share similar nominal temperature ratings: a maximum conductor operating temperature of 120°C (with 20,000 hours permissible at that temperature) and a short-circuit temperature of 250°C for up to 5 seconds. The ambient temperature range for fixed installation is typically –40°C to +90°C.

However, H1Z2Z2-K cables are tested to more rigorous environmental criteria under EN 50618, including enhanced resistance to UV, ozone, acids, alkalis, and salt spray. They are specifically designed for permanent outdoor use under variable and harsh climate conditions, including direct burial and long-term water immersion scenarios. PV1-F, while also weather-resistant, is generally considered less robust in extreme environments such as desert, high-altitude, or coastal installations.

5. Typical Applications and Selection Guidance
The practical choice between the two depends on system voltage, project location, market requirements, and expected service life.
H1Z2Z2-K — recommended for:
Large-scale ground-mounted solar farms (1500 V DC architecture)
High-power, long-distance DC collector circuits
Projects in extreme climates (desert, high altitude, coastal, offshore)
Installations requiring direct burial or exposure to standing water
Export projects targeting European markets or tender specifications referencing EN 50618

PV1-F — suitable for:
Small to medium distributed PV systems with lower DC voltages
Rooftop installations in temperate climates
Projects with limited budget where certification compatibility is not a constraint
Replacement or extension of existing PV1-F installations
As a general rule: if the project requires high reliability, long service life, and future-proof certification, H1Z2Z2-K is the appropriate choice. If the system operates at lower DC voltage and the installation environment is moderate, PV1-F may be technically adequate—but specifiers should be aware of its legacy certification status.
