Copper has a melting point of 1083°C, and magnesium oxide melts at 2800°C—both are non-combustible. The seamless copper tube sheath completely seals the cable, and the magnesium oxide insulation is a dense, solid entity—making it impossible for water or moisture to enter. Copper sheaths offer excellent corrosion resistance, often eliminating the need for additional protective measures. The inorganic construction of fireproof cables is immune to the aging and degradation mechanisms that affect polymer-insulated cables—such as oxidation, UV degradation, and thermal aging. This results in an exceptionally long service life, often exceeding 50 years.
3. Fireproof vs. Flame-Retardant: Understanding the Critical Difference
It is important to distinguish between flame-retardant cables and fireproof (fire-resistant) cables—they serve very different purposes:
Flame-retardant cables are designed to prevent or slow the spread of fire along the cable route. They will self-extinguish once the ignition source is removed but do not guarantee circuit functionality during a fire.
Fireproof (fire-resistant) cables are designed to maintain circuit integrity—continuing to operate for a specified time under direct flame exposure, often while also withstanding water spray and mechanical impact.
In critical life-safety applications, flame-retardant cables alone are insufficient. Fireproof cables are mandatory for circuits that must remain operational during a fire.
